He came to Melbourne High School in and completing his 5fth and 6th form years. He excelled at sport, and especially at tennis, as well as athletics. He did well in his Matriculation, which took him to the University of Melbourne here he completed his Bachelor of Commerce and Dip Ed and embarked on a teaching career.
He returned to the school as a teacher in the s where he was a notable teacher of economics and accounting.
He then developed his own consulting and economic analysis firm- which soon acquired a high reputation. His ground-breaking research into the relationship between financial health and share price performance became the framework for the creation of the Lincoln Indicators business.
He established a firm which continues to this day, his son Tim being involved in the firm. Ill-health forced his retirement in However, he was better known as an athlete and a world famous middle distance runner.
He reached the final of the metres at the Olympic Games in Melbourne. He won a silver medal in the mile at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games and twice competed in the summer Olympic Games. An outstanding runner, his career was eclipsed by both John Landy and Herb Elliott.
His time of 3: Despite his loss to Elliott at the Australian championships he did also win a national championship mile that year, winning the United States championship race as an outside competitor.
Lincoln reached his peak in but was overshadowed by the rapidly improving Elliott. He set his personal mile best of 3: News ranked Lincoln as second in the world that year; however, that proved to be the last time he was ranked among the world's top ten and at the Olympics in Rome he failed to qualify from the heats.
He continued to run after retiring from competition, and at age 50 could run the mile in 5 mins, and at aged 60 in 6 minutes! Throughout his career, like John Landy he was known as the epitome of a well disciplined gentleman.
He never lost his affection for the school.
His last years were sad as he was forced into care and became unaware of his situation. At the unveiling of his statue in the grounds of the school, his wife Dawn, and sons Tony and Tim attended on his behalf.
